I just mastered a record for a FANTASTIC band out of Helsinki called The Wha’s. Produced by my friend Gordon Raphael. Over the course of mastering this I absolutely fell in love with it and ended up spending about three times as long on it as I normally would; I wanted it to sound PERFECT because I knew I’d be listening to it a lot afterward! Ha.

Check out their website for now to get a sense of what they’re up to; I’ll put the record up on my Mastering page in the next couple of weeks!

So our friend JT Spangler called me a few weeks ago with a proposition: what if we were to experiment with doing some highly alternative, unusual R&B/soul? The concept was that it would be a marriage of his songwriting and my production, and we’d see where it went.

The good news is that JT was here last week, and it went somewhere REALLY COOL. I just wrapped the mix on the first proof-of-concept song — which is called “Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore” — and it’s awesome. Deep and groovy and dark and super cool. We found ourselves looking to Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” record for some points of inspiration, and it looks like we’ll be going to that well more for the rest of the project, if that’s any indication. FUN.

It looks like we’ll be doing at least an EP of this stuff. I can’t post any of it just yet, but I’m super excited for you to hear it. It’s going to be a very cool record. More soon!
